On transitioning to the workforce, there are quite a few challenges that you might face post being a student. I have decided to share some of the struggles I faced (and sort of still going through )which you might face as well on entering the professional world.
Let’s get into it
Unclear Expectations
When I was a student, I was used to receiving clear grades and feedback on my performance, assessments etc. However, in the professional world, the metrics for success are often more vague (Although, this may be relative to your field of work). There may be no clear indications of whether you’re meeting expectations or falling short especially if you were not the type of student to consult your tutors during university assessment, you may also struggle to consult your manager while working as well. This lack of clear criteria can be unsettling, leaving you uncertain about your progress and growth.
[mailerlite_form form_id=3]Being Proactive
When I was student, we would often have teachers remind us that we had upcoming assessment due and sometimes the academic calender for uni was set up in a way to help student have time for their assessments , coursework etc. However, in the professional world, no one is going to chase you down and tell you what to do. You either do or you don’t , all people will care about is the result. So the onus is on you to be proactive, seek out opportunities, and take the initiative to develop your skills and advance your career. This shift in responsibility can be a rude awakening for someone like me who had a terrible habit of waiting until last minute to turn in my work.
Balancing Social Life
As a student, my social life was sort of built into my daily routine – classes, clubs, and campus events provided ample chances to socialize or just be with people. Transitioning to a 9-to-5 job can make it challenging to maintain a social life(Trust me…I’m still struggling). You’ll need to be deliberate about scheduling time with friends, networking events, and other extracurricular activities to prevent feelings of isolation and burnout(which I havn’t done yet, so I’ll keep you updated lol).
To round up, when transitioning through life stages like this one, I feel it is a journey of self-discovery and adaptability, and I’m looking forward to seeing where this journey takes me. How about you?
