Before I got a full time job, I always thought I would be good at managing money. I mean I did study Economics in school so….yeah. There was not a doubt in my mind that if I wanted to save a certain amount of money each month, I would be able to- because I am disciplined and have good money management and I am just that good.
These past few months have hit me the hardest financially because I got to get a glimpse of the importance of saving and earning money. First of , my laptop crashed. I had to buy a new one and retrieve the data from the old one. Then I had to pay for my bus pass which cost a pretty penny, because apparently, teleporting isn’t a thing yet. Then it was paying for my blog so that you are able to read this post right now and then groceries, bills and much more.
But that’s not why we are here-well it kind of is. We’re here because I’ve been wondering if I am just terrible at managing my finances, or is the issue that I’m simply not earning enough to cover my expenses comfortably? Although I think it’s probably a bit of both, It is something I feel I need to vent about.
So, here are my thoughts…
How are people even surviving out here? Like, really, how? I’ve come to realize that minimum wage might as well be the minimum chance of survival. Surely, even unemployment benefits must be higher than this, right? Right??
How do people save? I touched on this in a previous post, #AskanAdult: How do people save money?, but it feels even more shocking now. Everything is just so expensive. I was talking to friends back home, and they said if you see something you like in a store, you’d better buy it immediately because the price will likely go up if you come back later.
How are people managing to be financially independent in this economy? I’ve always wondered how some people can easily move in with their partners after only a few months of dating. Sure, love is the reason, but at this point, I’m convinced it’s also for the sake of splitting rent! I saw an advert for £750 for an ensuite and a shared kitchen with five people? You’re telling me that’s 750 Quid —750 Great British Pounds Sterling??
Should I start investing? How do I even begin? I just want to be a millionaire so freakin’ bad—Bruno Mars got it right!
If there’s one thing I’m looking forward to, it’s the day I stop worrying about money and finally reach financial independence because… DAMN.
What’s something you bought (or wanted to buy) recently that left you shocked by the price?
See you same time, next week?

Buh the thing is, I don’t think one can ever stop worrying about money
Oh gosh , I hope that’s not true😫 Surely, there is an amount of money you would want to have that would make you feel like you are set for life.
My husband wanted a couch that’s in the five digits range. We got the couch and I still ask myself why is a couch so damn expensive.
Having a budget, however, is key. For me how I managed money before I got married and after I got married is very different. Everyone has their own style of money management, you just need to find what works best for you.
One thing I do that might be helpful for you aside from a budget is, if something unexpected comes up and I use $500 from my savings, I consider that $500 as a loan that I’m required to pay back. Then I make it a point to put that $500 back into my account. It helps you keep your account replenished.
A couch in the five digits?! WoW! Thanks for the tip, I think I should have done that instead of getting a credit card but then again, I think it helps me be a bit more strict in the repayment as aspect. but I just might give this a try. what way would you say budgeting before and after marriage is different?
