This post is about How to Deal With Being Unemployed After Graduation
Long before I graduated, I felt like I was unemployed. I saw people secure jobs in their field way before graduation and for some -shortly after graduation and it just made me feel down. So I understand that It’s not an easy situation for anyone to be in, especially if this is something you want. So before I get into this post, I want to congratulate you on your graduation. I’m super proud of you!!. Also, I want to confidently inform you (Yes, because I speak for all lol) that you’re not alone, trust me -many graduates find themselves in the same boat.
So If you find yourself unemployed after graduation, here are 6 tips to help you cope:
Accepting Your Reality: The Comparison May Never Stop
The first step in dealing with unemployment after graduation is accepting your reality. It’s natural to compare yourself to others(especially those who seem to be effortlessly landing jobs) but remember that everyone’s path is different. Your journey may have a few more bumps, but that doesn’t mean you won’t reach your destination. Take a deep breath, acknowledge your feelings, and understand that it’s okay not to have everything figured out right away.
Also, if you already compare yourself to people who have jobs when you don’t, even when you get a job, you might find yourself comparing your jobs, your role, your pay, your work-life balance etc to other people. So it’s really important that you accept that your journey is your own, and the timelines of others do not dictate your own success💕.

The job market is currently shit. Yeah- I said it. Especially in the tech space. But aside from the tech space, there are other fields that are also doing really bad and really well right now. Last I heard , the UK is in recession soo yeah. My point is, it’s super important to remind yourself that this situation may not be your fault and that it will not be permanent (be honest with yourself, do you REALLY think you will be unemployed for 66 years?).
Also, I suggest you stay informed about trends in your industry (I need to take my advice🤦♀️), and be prepared to adapt your job search strategy as needed. Also remember that just because the job market is tough right now , does not mean it is impossible to get a job.

Prepare for Rejection: It’s business not personal
Unfortunately, you’re likely to face a lot of rejections during your job search. Treat each one as a learning experience and an opportunity to improve your interviewing skills. I remember getting rejected after a 4 stage interview process. It stung on a personal level, but at the end of the day, it really was business. Rather than letting each one get you down, mentally prepare yourself for the inevitability of rejection. Rejection is part of the process, not a personal failure.
Upskill: Make Yourself Useful to Many People
It’s really important to continue to develop your skills and learn new skills during this time. For example; if you are looking for software developer roles, you can look into learning new software languages and libraries, you can even go ahead to learn consultancy skills so you could work in other roles for the time being whilst still looking for the job of your dreams. It’s really important to do this even when you have a job, but more important when you don’t have a job yet, because you have more time to invest in yourself. Someone said invest in yourself so that people will invest in you, and no truer words have been said!

Don’t Stop Applying: You got this!
One of the most important things you can do is to keep applying. It can be discouraging to send out application after application with little to no response. Set a goal for yourself, whether it’s applying to a certain number of jobs per day or per week. Apply, Apply, Apply! Even on the days when you don’t feel like it, push yourself to submit applications. Your hard work will pay off, even if it takes time. Persistence is key in navigating the job market, especially in challenging times like this.

Finally, remember to talk to your friends, family, or career advisors!- basically any support system that you might have. Let your friends and family know how you’re feeling—whether it’s good, bad, or somewhere in between. They can provide emotional support, advice, and maybe even job leads. Sometimes just talking about your struggles can lighten the load because it can get overwhelming and demotivating at the same time.
Overall, I wish you(and me) all the best in y(our) job search! and I pray that you(we) are steps closer to y(our) dream career this week. Okay, that’s it for me. See you next week!!
